#09 Local Business Spotlight

This That & The Other Thing

197 Colborne St, Brantford, ON

I am what you would call a thriftanista.

I love discovering new thrift stores in every town I visit, and Brantford is no different. One day while exploring the city, I came across the most incredible thrift store - run by a whole family - mom, dad, sons, daughter and even their grandmother – who incidentally reminded me so much of Hazel McCallion the former mayor of Mississauga she had so much fire and spunk in her – I fell in love with her right away.

What a fabulous thrift store – so much magic in every corner.

As I walked through, my mind wandered.

These places are more than stores; they are galleries of history, where every item is a work of art, crafted not only by hands but by the passage of time itself.

To thrift is to dance with the ghosts of bygone eras, to trace the outlines of love and labor imprinted in the grain of the wood, the warp and weft of the fabric.

In the silence of browsing, I find the beauty of imperfection, the elegance of wear and tear.

Each scratch, each dent, in every piece, is a testament to a life well-lived, a story waiting to be retold. These objects, with their faded colors and worn edges, speak of resilience, endurance, and the beauty of surviving and thriving through the ages.

It is a reminder that beauty exists in the old, the used, the passed-over, waiting for eyes willing to see it, hands ready to reshape it.

In these spaces, we are not just shoppers; we are curators of the past and architects of beauty, weaving the threads of history into the fabric of our present.

So when you visit a thrift store, enter with your heart open to discover and let your imagination become aflame, ready to discover, transform, and love.

And remember before you purchase any new furniture, think about thrift shopping for an alternative, you might just be surprised.

Gorgeous Mirrors - Thrift Store

In the act of thrifting, you will find not just objects but fragments of dreams, pieces of a puzzle that, when assembled, create a tapestry rich with history, beauty, and life.

After all, there is something to the saying – ‘One man’s trash is another man’s riches.”

Take at how this persons Livingroom, everything in it is thrifted or found on FB marketplace - the possibilities are endless.

Happy thrifting at This That & The Other Thing – you will be there for hours – every corner you turn you will find treasures, and more treasures. 😂

A Botanical Wonderland Fundraiser

Paris Plant show

The Paris Horticultural Society (PHS) hosted a vibrant and bustling annual plant sale at the Syl Apps Community Centre in Paris, drawing over 200 enthusiastic community members.

The event showcased an impressive selection of roughly 1,500 plants, attracting nearly 60 to 70 early risers who eagerly lined up before the doors opened at 8:00 a.m., all vying for the first pick of the green treasures.

Inside, a botanical wonderland awaited shoppers, featuring an exquisite array of non-invasive perennial and annual plant species. From heirloom vegetables and fragrant herbs to vibrant flowers, majestic trees, elegant shrubs, ornamental grasses, and native plants, the sale offered something for every garden enthusiast's dream.

"All the funds raised will be directed towards numerous town projects, including planting and garden maintenance across Paris," Reansbury explained.
